About the Opportunity

Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service (OVAHS) is seeking a Registered Nurse (Paediatric Primary Care) to join their team in Kununurra, WA on a full-time basis .

Reporting to the Health Operations Manageryou will be providing primary health care services, health checks and assessments for paediatric clients, focusing on children up to 4 years old. Approximately 70-80% of your time will be spent in the clinic, with the other 30% of your time spent on outreach and education activities within the community.

More specifically, you will be:

  • Assessing and managing acute presentations of children to the clinic following the Kimberley Sick Child Protocols;
  • Providing education to client families on disease prevention, treatments, and the management of health conditions.
  • Coordinating the visiting Paediatrician’s lists, supporting the clinic and arranging follow up where needed;
  • Providing advice and sharing your clinical knowledge or expertise with other staff members;
  • Leading continuous quality improvement activities to improve services and outcomes for Aboriginal people; and
  • Referring to and working with allied health services, supporting patients to attend both internal and external service appointments.

About You

To be considered for this position you will be recognised by AHPRA as a Registered Nurse, with demonstrated post-graduate experience in a paediatric setting.

Any experience working constructively with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people and/or communities will be highly regarded, but is not essential provided you can demonstrate an understanding of the issues faced by Aboriginal people in rural and remote areas and the impact they have on health and wellbeing.

You will need to be able to work both collaboratively, as part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as autonomously, without supervision. You will have the high-level writing skills and computer proficiency required to develop and evaluate detailed care plans and prepare reports for management.

Importantly, OVAHS is looking for someone with the strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills necessary to promote health literacy and support the self-management of conditions. You will be able and willing to effectively explain the purpose of any investigations, tests or treatments to patients to ensure that they are fully informed, understand their condition, and are given a voice.

Please note: The successful candidate will require a current 'C' class drivers licence, and either hold or be willing to obtain National Police Clearance and Working with Children clearance prior to commencement.
